Usually, in case of overbooking, the airline looks for volunteers who would cancel their booking for the flight in exchange for particular benefits. These volunteers must be provided with two options:
If the volunteer chooses the route change option, they should be provided with further support from the airline. It may include meals and refreshments, telephone communications, accommodation, and transportation from the airport.
If you were denied boarding and you were not willing to opt for these two options, you are eligible for compensation of €250-€600 per passenger in addition to the full refund of your ticket price.
The criteria for the flight disruption to be eligible for compensation are exactly the same. However, it is important to know that intermediary points outside the European Union might cause the 261/2004 regulation to be not applicable.
In the case of a delay or cancellation in a complex flight route (several flights), the total delay to your final destination is used to determine whether you are entitled to compensation.
For this to work, all the connecting flights in your overall route must be bought under a single booking code. In another case, each flight will be considered as a separate flight.
